Kern River project

Q. What happens when you give us 2 1/2 acres on the Kern River to design?
A. Yet another masterpiece!

When our clients told us we'd be designing a project on the Kern River, we knew it had to be special. Having built their previous waterfall in Mammoth Lakes, we also knew their enjoyment of the outdoors and love of wildlife. On our first visit to the site, we found it had natural elevations and plenty of potential. We wanted to create a classy estate-style yard with plenty of room to entertain, yet retain clear views of the Kern River flowing in the background.

Our design included multi-level tiers in the front and back yards, with view-specific decks and lots of room for entertaining. Over 26 outlets, 24 water faucets, extra-wide walkways and color-contrasting steps bring convenience and safety to all the areas of the project. Two waterfalls were also designed to take full advantage of the existing slopes and elevations. And since most entertaining is done in the evening, over 150 high-voltage lights were designed to illuminate this masterpiece.

From the main parking area, you'll pass this 3500 gallon pond and GFRC waterfall on your way to the entry of the house. Underneath age-old cottonwood trees, a peaceful sitting area provides a place of rest while you listen to the sounds of rustling water. A bronze eagle swoops down to catch two leaping fish that spurt water into the pond.

The water is kept crystal-clear by two pumps, a large sand filter with Zeobrite, an ozone sterilization unit, an automatic chlorine feeder, and a skimmer. Both pumps are variable speed, the clients can adjust the flow of the waterfall from a soft trickle to roaring rapids.

The back yard waterfall is actually two waterfalls in one. An upper waterfall and pond flows into a 20 foot long channel that falls into the lower pond. The sight and sound changes drastically depending on where you go.

Again, there are two pumps, one for filtration, and one for water effect. We utilized a 5 horsepower pump to provide the massive water, over 400 GPM with both pumps running. The 2500 gallons of water in the upper and lower ponds is turned over in just over 6 minutes.

There are no fewer than five decks at different elevations in the back yard, all of which provide some type of view of the Kern River. One looks up river, one down river, and one actually goes out to the river. Planters and lawns were designed to integrate into the decks and bring nature that much closer.

Safety was a prime concern in the yard, all the steps are wide and easy to see, and black wrought-iron railings give guests a place to rest their arms and soak it all in.

How important is a lighting design? A well thought-out nightscape does not happen by accident. What can we say? The pictures speak for themselves.

We used eight different types of light fixtures to illuminate the pictures you see. All the fixtures are high-voltage, almost 4 miles of copper wire was run to power them. With over 150 individual lights used, there is no fumbling in the dark. The stone walkways area well lit and give your eyes a path to follow. Bollard lights delineate the driveway, while the little round dome lights give a warm glow to the numerous walls and steps. The waterfalls area lit with state-of-the-art fiber optic lighting systems that can continually change color.

With the right lighting, nighttime brings a new world of vibrance and atmosphere. The lighting emphasizes key elements of the landscape; the trees, walkways, walls, and foliage.
